Son of David Isaac Oakley and Honora Agnes Oakley nee Smith of Leibig Street, Warrnambool, Victoria.

Harold served his butchery apprenticeship with W. Hunt of Warrnambool.

Commenced return to Australia on 9 March 1919 aboard HT Kashmir disembarking on 30 April 1919
