ELSLEY ARTHUR COOK was born at Palmerston North, New Zealand, on 25th January, 1893, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Thompson R. Cook, of Auckland.
He was educated at Masterton High School, and entered the service of the Bank on 22nd July, 1910, in Masterton, New Zealand. In May, 1914, he was transferred to Adelaide, and enlisted a fortnight after the outbreak of war. He embarked with the first Australian convoy, and having been twice wounded in the intervening three years, was eventually promoted in the field to the rank of second lieutenant on 31st May, 1917, and to first lieutenant a few months later.
