Alfred Joseph Bonds was born in the year 1883 in Ballarat, Victoria. Before the war, he worked as an insurance agent. His occupation included selling insurance products and services within an assigned territory. Alfred was not married and had no children; he had a tan complexion and grey eyes. He had no experience in the military. His height was 5ft 3 (161cm) with a weight of 116lbs (53kg). Alfred’s parent was his mother Ms Annie Bonds (Father unknown).  He had three brothers (Martin, Albert, and Charlie) and three sisters (Violet, Rose, Annie). 

On the 2nd of February 1915, at the age of 31 Alfred enlisted at Keswick, South Australia for the war. His journey to war began with a departure from Adelaide on the 31st of May 1915. The boat he was on was called HMAT A2 Geelong.

During the war Alfred was a foot soldier, who was trained to march and carry all the equipment. Throughout the war Alfred was sent to hospital and needed treatment for multiple injuries. He went AWL twice on 2 January 1916 and 3 April 1916. He very likely served on Gallipoli but this is not mentioned in his Service Record.

On April 13th 1917, Alfred was admitted to hospital with influenza. He was back in hospital on May 26th and on July 25th was diagnosed with pleurisy (Inflammation of the tissues that line the lungs and chest cavity.) He was cleared and sent home on January 24th, 1918 with emphysema . When he got back home, he had a severe Trench Fever which lead him being in hospital from the 17th of February to 15th April 1918.

Alfred Joseph Bonds was not married. He died at the age of 56 on the 16th of February 1941.
