Sergeant Neil Grant (Service No:VX52470) initially served in the ACMF (Private; Service No:V56177) with 32nd Infantry Battalion from 9 January 1940 to 1 January 1941. On 1 April 1941 he enlisted in the AIF and as a Private attached to 2nd/8th Infantry Battalion served in the Middle East (28 June 1941 - 29 March 1942). In New Guinea with 2nd/8th Infantry Battalion (7 November 1944 - 4 February 1946), he was promoted to Sergeant, also serving with 2nd/5th Infantry Battalion, 2nd/1st Field Regiment and 4 Port Operations Coy. Sergeant Grant was attached to 2nd/8th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 21 March 1946.
Neil was born in 1918 in Melbourne Victoria, fifth of seven children of George Alexander Grant (b1877 in Amherst, Central Goldfields, Victoria) and Amelia Eleanor Ingram Thompson (b1880 in Ballarat, Victoria). George (a Labourer) and Amelia married in 1908 in Melbourne, Victoria where they settled and raised their family and George worked as a Labourer and Checker.
Neil was working in Melbourne as a Labourer before he enlisted for service in WWII. Following his Discharge, in 1946 in Melbourne he married Rita Mary Kuhnell (b1922 in Melbourne) - Rita served in the Army in WWII (Sapper; Service No:Vf510712). Neil and Rita settled in Melbourne where they raised their family and Neil worked as a Labourer. Rita died in 1990 and Neil in 2001.
