Son of Thomas Francis Orchard and Ellen Orchard nee of Normanby Avenue, Northcote, Victoria.

Prior to enlisting Arthur had served as a Bugler in the Royal Australian Navy for four years.

Commenced return to Australia on 8 October 1918 aboard HT Port Sydney disembarking on  2 December 1918

During 1919 Arthur married Emily Myra Strawbridge in Victoria
