Died on this date – 14th October…… Frank Schofield was born at Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England around 1882/1883 to parents Edward & Betsy Jane Schofield  (nee Dyson).

He married Lizzie Wilkinson on 10th October, 1911 in Christ Church, Linthwaite, West Yorkshire, England.

Frank Schofield, Tailor, aged 28, was a passenger on Wilcannia which departed from the port of London, England on 14th October, 1911 bound for Sydney, Australia.

On 15th January, 1915 Frank Schofield enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) at Liverpool, Sydney, NSW as a 32 year old, married, Tailor from Ivy Hotel, Linthwaite, Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England His next of kin was listed as his wife – Mrs F. Schofield, Ivy Hotel, Linthwaite, Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England. Frank Schofield stated on his Attestation Papers that he had served in Royal Marines for 8 years.

Company Sergeant Major Frank Schofield, Service number 801, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on HMAT Ceramic (A40) on 25th June, 1915 with the 5th Infantry Brigade, 18th Infantry Battalion “C” Company.

He proceeded from Alexandria on 16th August, 1915 to join M.E.F. (Mediterranean Expeditionary Force) at Gallipoli. Company Sergeant Major Schofield reverted to Ranks at his own request on 17th August, 1915 at Gallipoli Peninsula & was transferred to “A” Company.

Private Frank Schofield was to be Corporal from 28th August, 1915 vice Hotson killed. Corporal Frank Schofield was to be Temporary Sergeant from 5th October, 1915 vice Barnett evacuated sick. Temporary Sergeant Frank Schofield was confirmed Sergeant from 23rd November, 1915 vice CSM Smith struck off strength.

Sergeant Frank Schofield disembarked at Alexandria ex Mudros on 9th January, 1916 (after the evacuation of Gallipoli).

He proceeded from Alexandria on 18th March, 1916 to join B.E.F. (British Expeditionary Force) & disembarked at Marseilles, France on 25th March, 1916.

On 1st April, 1916 Sergeant Schofield was promoted to Company Sergeant Major in France vice 188 C.S.M. Smith, W.J., struck off strength.

Company Sergeant Major Frank Schofield was tried by a F.G.C.M. (Field General Court Martial) at Erquinghelm on 26th June, 1916. Charge: “Conduct to the prejudice of good order & military discipline in that he at Bois Grenier on 15/6/1916 did cause to be completed A.F.C. 2123 by which he & Coy. Orderly Room Staff were detailed for patrol work, well knowing same to be false.” Finding: Guilty. Sentence: Reduced to the rank of Corporal on 29th June, 1916. Period in confinement awaiting Trail: 16/6/16 to 26/6/16.

Corporal Frank Schofield was to be Temporary Sergeant from 8th August, 1916 vice Ritchie wounded. He was promoted to Sergeant from 8th November, 1916.

From 14th November, 1916 Sergeant Schofield was taken on strength of 5th Training Battalion at Rollestone, Wiltshire, England. He was appointed Acting C.S.M. on 22nd November, 1916. He was posted for duty with 5th Infantry Training Battalion, England & placed on Supernumerary List on 28th November, 1916.

Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. Some of these were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire.

Acting Company Sergeant Major Frank Schofield was appointed to Permanent Cadre with 5th Training Battalion at Rollestone, Wiltshire from 1st January, 1917. He was promoted to Temporary C.S.M. on 1st February, 1917 under A.I.F. Orders para 213.

He was A.W.L. (absent without leave) from 13th August, 1917 & returned from A.W.L. on 22nd August, 1917. He was written up for an Offence – A.W.L from 13th August, 1917 to 22nd August, 1917. This was admonished by O.C. 5th Training Battalion & he forfeited 10 days’ pay.

On 7th October, 1917 Temporary Company Sergeant Major Schofield was admitted to Fargo Military Hospital, Wiltshire – cause N.Y.D. (not yet determined).

Company Sergeant Major Frank Schofield died at 3.15 am on 14th October, 1917 at Fargo Military Hospital, Wiltshire, England from Tubercle of Lung.

The body of Company Sergeant Major Frank Schofield sent to his wife – Mrs Schofield, Ivy Hotel, Linthwaite, Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England to be interred at Linthwaite Cemetery. He was buried on 17th October, 1917 in Christ Church Churchyard & Extension, Linthwaite, West Yorkshire, England in Private Family Vault. His death is still acknowledged by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
