On the 5th April 1969, Lance Corporal Charles Edward Wiggins, 30th Battalion (Reg No-779), shop assistant from 99 Dumaresque Street, Hamilton, New South Wales and New Lambton?, N.S.W., died age 73, and his ashes cremated at Beresfield Crematorium, date unknown, ashes interred at Sandgate Cemetery, date unknown. 

Born at Auckland, New Zealand on the 24th November 1895 to Charles Snr, died 28.6.1953, 99 Dumaresque Street, Hamilton, N.S.W., age?, cremated at Newcastle Memorial Park, not listed on Find a Grave, and Clara Elizabeth Wiggins, died 1966?, Newcastle, N.S.W., Charles enlisted on the 12th July 1915, age 19 years 7 months, at Liverpool, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A72 Beltana on the 9th November 1915.

Disembarked Suez, Egypt 11.12.1915.

Wounded in action - 20.7.1916 (GSW left leg, fractured, slight, Battle of Fromelles), 16.4.1918 (GSW left thigh, severe).

Appointed Lance Corporal 16.10.1917.

Granted leave to England from 20.1.1918 to 3.2.1918.

Invalided to England 21.4.1918.

Commenced return to Australia 8.11.1918.

Charles arrived home invalided on the 29th December 1918, not being discharged until the 20th June 1919.

Mr. Wiggins’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial, Hamilton Superior Public School Roll of Honor, Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor, Hamilton Presbyterian Church (Scots Kirk) Roll of Honour, Hamilton Star of Rechabites Tent No. 80 Roll of Honour, Wickham Superior Public School Roll of Honour, Newcastle & Suburban Co-Operative Society Ltd Roll of Honour and the Newcastle 39th Fortress Company, Australian Engineers' Roll of Honour.

There is a small metal plaque at the gravesite to tell us that the ashes of Charles have been placed here, so October 2019 I erected a cross adorned with poppies in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country. CONGREGATIONAL-2CNE. 22.
