Ernest Gregory was born December, 1890, in Darlington, Durham, England. He had no known siblings only having his mother named Mrs Sara Gregory. He had moved to Yelata, West Coast, South Australia alone working as a farm labourer.

He inlisted on the 28 March 1916 as a private. Being put in the 32nd Battalion, 7th Reinforcement. His unit embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on board HMAT A57 Malakuta on 27 June 1916.

He was twice wounded in the war, first in the neck and the second time by gas. After the armistice he received leave to work on his brother's farm in Northumberland and while married Mary Jane Fenwick. He returned to Australia after that.
