From Sue Guinan
Lt Herbert William McBean
Born 3rd March 1892 Ringarooma Tasmania the son of John Anderson and Isobel Mary McBean (nee Emmett)a bank teller he embarked Melbourne 25th October 1916 on board “HMAT Ulysses” with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant (Honorary Lieutenant). He was killed in action 19th May 1919 in France and is commemorated in the Frechencourt Communal Cemetery, Frechencourt, Amiens,Picardie, France.
Profound regret was expressed at Scottsdale when the distressing news was circulated that Lieutenant H. W. McBean son ofMr and Mrs J A McBean of North Scottsdale had beenkilled in action on May 9th. The late soldier was widely known and very popular. He was a good athlete and prominent footballer and prior to enlisting took a leading part in the militia. For sometime he occupied the position of teller at the National Bank and there, as everywhere else, gained the esteemand respect of all with whom he came into contact. Lt McBean was about 25 years of age and enlisted over two years ago. He was born at Jetsonville and lived in the district practically all his life. Another brother Stanley is on active service.
