From the Clunes Guardian and Gazette, November 1916:

"A cable was received by the relatives last week that Private Richard Grenfell, son of Mr. Richard Grenfell of Tourello, had been killed in action in France. The deceased was a very popular young man, and well known throughout the district. He was a member of the Clunes Gun Club and a good shot. He was also, a good all round cricketer.

Richard Grenfell enlisted in the AIF at Ballarat on 31 July 1915, aged 23.

He embarked overseas on 7 March 1916 and arrived in Egypt on 10 May.

He departed Egypt on 21 June and landed at Marseilles on 30 June, where he was transferred and taken on strength of the 59th Battalion on 15 August 1916.

He attended the 5th Division Grenade School of Instruction between 28 September – 13 October 1916, when he returned to the battalion.

The 59th Battalion was manning the front line near Flers on 31 October 1916 when Pte Richard Grenfell sustained a mortal wound. The nature of the wound is unrecorded, and he died “in the field” before he could reach medical aid.

He was buried in Thistle Dump Cemetery, High Wood, Longueval, France.
