Harland Philipson was the son of William and Margaret Philipson, of Black Jack, Charters Towers, Queensland. Prior to the war he worked as an amalgamator in the mining industry in Charters Towers.
His older brother, 2456 Pte. Nicholas John Philipson 9th Battalion AIF had been killed in action almost exactly 12 months previously on 28 December 1916, aged 25.
Harland joined the 26th Battalion at the front on 27 October 1917. He died of wounds exactly two months later in Belgium
