Military Medal
'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the operations east of HAMEL from 8th to 11th August, 1918. This soldier is a Company Scout and throughout the attack was in front of his Company. At one point he attacked with great daring single-handed and captured 10 prisoners. Later during a minor operation when his Company advanced 1000 yards he acted as part of a screen and secured valuable information for his Company Commander. At all times he is a bold and fearless scout and he set a splendid example of coolness and bravery during the whole operation.'

A well-known and highly esteemed resident of Lewisham in the person of Mr. Michael Duffy passed away on April 10. Mr. Duffy was born at Manly and was for over 20 years a draughtsman in the Survey Branch of the Registrar General's Department and an indefatigable member of the St. Vincent dePaul Society. He was also a devoted member of the Sodality of the Sacred Heart. Mr. Duffy enlisted during the war and suffered very severe wounds from which he never permanently recovered, although not affecting him seriously enough to prevent him follow ing his ordinary pursuits. Of late months, however, he has not enjoyed good health at all, and the old trouble evidenced itself once more and subsequently ended in his early demise. He was married in Cork, Ireland, to Miss Mary Green, and shortly after marriage they came to Sydney in 1920 and settled at Chatswood, then moving to Ashfield, and finally to Lewisham. He was a loving husband and father and a devoted Catholic, faithful to his religious duties and charitable to the poor, and he leaves behind him a record of a good and useful life. He is survived by his wife, four sons and one daughter, and great sympathy goes out to them in their sad loss. The remains were removed to St. Thomas' Church, Lewisham, where a Requiem Mass was celebrated for the repose of the soul, Rev. Father E. J. Heffernan being the celebrant. The funeral left the church afterwards for Roolcwood cemetery, accompanied by Rev. Father G. Bartlett, adm., Sr. Mary's Cathedral, who was a life long friend of the deceased. The large number of friends who attended both Mass and funeral and also the many beautiful wreaths manifested in no uncertain manner the popularity and esteem in which deceased was held.
Rev. Father Bartleit, assisted by Rev.
Father E.J. Heffernan, recited the last prayers at the graveside. Tlie funeral arrangements were carried out by Geo. Andrews.
