Biography contributed by John Lakey

Lieutenant Sidney Wolton GULLETT 29th Battalion 7th Reinforcement In the LE TRANSIOY SECTOR, during the period from 28th February to 2nd March 1917, Lieut. Gullett displayed marked courage and endurance. On the nights of 28th. February/1st March 1917, in his capacity of Lewis Gun Officer, he visited all guns in line from ZENITH to MONSOON TRENCH, which entailed a very long walk through heavy mud. On the morning of the 2nd March a party from the Battalion attacked and took a position of the enemy trench (SUNRAY TRENCH) and shortly afterwards the enemy counter-attacked. During these operations the casualties amongst Officers were very heavy, and Lieut. Gullett was to take charge of one of the front line Companies. Although very tired, he worked very energetically to get everything in order. Shortly after arriving in the front line he was badly wounded, but, knowing that only one other Officer was left with the Company refused to leave the line until he had seen one of the Officers of the relieving Battalion and exacted a promise from him to hold the position at all costs. Recommendation: Military Cross [MC] Lieutenant Colonel Muir Purser C.O. 29th Battalion
