Corporal Irene Pye (Service No:VF513802) enlisted in the AWAS as a Private with No 4 Training Battalion Darley Vic on 8 September 1943 - graded Clerk. Promoted to Corproal on 8 February 1946, she was attached to 3rd Psychology Unit at Discharge on 11 February 1947. Corporal Pye enlisted with her sister Mary, and brothers Joe and Len also served in WWII.

Irene Teresa Pye was born at Port Fairy, Vic in 1923, fifth of six children of Timothy (Dusty) William Pye (b1892 in Bessiebelle via Port Fairy, Victoria) and Catherine (Kate) Mary Cain (b1896 at Yambuk, Victoria). Dusty (a Labourer) and Kate merried in 1916 in Port Fairy and settled in Bessiebelle via Port Fairy, where they raised their family and Dusty was a Labourer.

Irene - and her sister Mary - enlisted together in the AWAS in 1943 and, following her Discharge, irene worked in Melbourne for the Australian Tax Office. In 1948 in Port Fairy, Irene married  James (Jim) Henry Heywood (b1922 in Colac, Victoria) - Jim served in the Army and was a Carpenter in Melbourne following his Discharge. Irene and Jim settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Jim worked as a Carpenter. Following Jim's death in 1963, Ireene lived in Melbourne until her death in 2004. Irene was a member of the AWAS Service Assn (Vic) from its inception, and a member of the Blackburn Legacy Widows' Club.
