Biography

"THE LATE. PRIVATE C. J. T. WOODS.

Private Charles Julian Tenison Woods, the second son of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. T. Woods, of Stepney, enlisted at the first outbreak of war, and departed for Egypt with the 1st Australian Expeditionary Force. He was in the famous 10th Battalion, and participated in the landing at Gallipoli, and many engagements on that peninsula. He escaped without a wound or sickness. After the evacuation of Gallipoli, he proceeded to France, where he was in many engagements; and on July 23 he was with a bombing party in the first attack on Pozieres, and was caught in machine gun fire, and wounded in one arm and the left breast.

'After being hurt, he crawled back to the trench,' wrote one of this comrades, and then walked to the dressing station. He would not allow the stretcher bearers to carry him, saying, 'There are worse cases out there. I can walk, but some of those poor fellows can't. Go and carry them.' That was an hour after he was hit. He had bandaged his wounds himself, but was suffering from loss of blood. He arrived at the dressing station weak from hemorrhage, and died the same night. He was very popular in the battalion. He was very game, and whenever he was going out on a scouting or bombing expedition there were always plenty of volunteers to go with him." - from the Adelaide Chronicle 03 Feb 1917 (nla.gov.au)
