Aged 15, he and his family arrived in Western Australia from England in 1910. His WW1 papers list him as a millhand, a common occupation in the timber industry of the time.
In September 1915 newspaper article refers to an A T Blanch and other recruits from Bridgetown heading for Blackboy Hill training camp.
