Henry was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1867, third of eighteen children of Henry George Sandilands (b1837 in Middlesex, England) and Lucy Hicks (b1847 in Bulleen, Victoria). Henry Snr immigrated with his parents and siblings in the early 1840's, and he and Lucy married in 1864 in Heidelberg, Victoria. They lived in Melbourne and Bulleen before settling in Tallygaroopna, where they raised their family and Henry Snr was a Farmer.

Henry worked on the family farm at Tallygaroopna, and in 1897 at Bulleen in Victoria, he married Annie Florence Speake (b1876 in Fremantle, WA). In the early 1900s  the couple joined some of Henry's siblings in Western Australia, settling in Leederville, Perth where Henry joined the Postmaster General's Department as a Postman, Letter Sorter and Mail Officer. Retiring in 1928, Henry and Annie moved to Melbourne, where Henry died in 1951 and Annie in 1959.
