Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Youngest of three siblings (Edgar and Bill) who served in WWII, Corporal Ethel Grace McKenzie (Service No:99330) enlisted in the WAAAF as an Aircraftwoman I at No 3 Recruiting Centre Brisbane on 12 May 1942, and was posted to No 2 Aircraft Depot and SHQ Bradfield Park - mustered as Clerk Stores, re mustered as Clerk General. Promoted on 3 September 1943, Corporal McKenzie was attached to RAAF Command at Discharge on 15 December 1944.

Ettie was born in Roma, QLD in 1914, seventh of eight children of Alexander (Sandy) John McKenzie (b1867 in Coonabarabran, New South Wales) and Margaret Eliza Maude Hobson (b1884 in Leyburn, QLD). Sandy (a Labourer in Mitchell) and Margaret married in 1905 in Charleville, and settled in Mungalalla, where they raised their family. Sandy worked as a Labourer and Trapper before becoming a Settler at "Woodbine" via Mungalalla - Sandy was also a member of the Mungalalla State School Committee.

Ettie worked as a Governess at Bulls Creek via Adavale, and 1942 when she enlisted in the WAAF was living in Brisbane, where she worked for Penney's as a Clerk and Sales Assistant. In 1939 Ettie was engaged to Alfred John Simpson (b1913 in Roma, QLD) - Alfred was a Station Hand on his father's property in 1943 when he enlisted in the RAAF. Following Discharge, Ettie and Alfred married in Sydney in 1945. In the following years, Ettie is recorded as living in Mitchell, working as a Bookkeeper, and Alfred as working on his father's property in Surat. In the mid 1960s Ettie moved to Sandgate, where she died in 2006.
