Biography contributed by Ian Lang

Son of Mary Agnew and Samuel Thomas JACKSON

Wilfrid Jackson, the middle brother is listed on official documents with the spelling of “Wilfred” however he signed his attestation papers as Wilfrid with two “i”’s. Wilfrid was 23 when he enlisted on 9th March 1916. He gave his occupation as clerk and named his mother, Marie Agnew Jackson as next of kin, with an address of Kent House, Wickham Terrace.

After being initially posted to the 11th Depot Battalion at Bell’s Paddock Enoggera, Wilfrid was drafted into the 6th reinforcements for the 49th Battalion.

He departed Australia on 7th October 1916 on the “Ceramic” and proceeded directly to England; arriving in Plymouth on 21st November 1916.

Wilfrid was posted overseas to the large training camp at Etaples in January 1917. While still in the camp he reported sick and was evacuated to England with Myalgia (muscle pain). Wilfrid spent the next 5 months in and out of hospitals and convalescent depots, and then was hospitalised again with a dislocated cartilage in his knee.

After periods of convalescence and placement in training battalions, Wilfrid was returned to Australia for discharge in July 1918. His condition was listed as arthritis both knees. Wilfrid applied for repatriation benefits in 1930.
