Jack Alexander Marfleet was born on February 12th, 1895 at ‘The Oasis’ Yarrawalla, Pyramid Hill, Victoria. His parents were Henry John Marfleet (born 1859) and Margaret Ann (nee Kirk, born 02/04/1859). He was the youngest of six siblings Harry (1883), George (11/01/1885), Stanley (1888), Leslie (18/09/1889) and Lena (24/02/1893). The family moved to Melbourne while Jack was an infant, and he grew up there. He was educated at Balwyn and East Brunswick State Schools and served as a cadet in the citizen forces. After completing school Jacks was apprenticed as an electrician, and was working as an electrician in Horsham, Victoria when war broke out.
He joined the 6th Battalion at 19 years 7 months of age on August 28th 1914, with regimental number 1044. He embarked for Gallipoli on HMAT Hororata in Melbourne on October 19th, 1914.
He went ashore at Anzac Cove on April 25th 1915 as part of the second wave and was shot in the stomach. He was evacuated to HMNZ ‘Goslar’ but died on April 26th, 1915. He was buried at Sea from that vessel ‘near Gaba Tepe’. He is remembered at the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli Peninsula, Canakkale Province, Turkey.
