Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Walter was the son of Charles and Sarah Christiana Bayliss, Greenwich, Sydney, New South Wales.

His older brother, 10121 Gunner Alfred John Bayliss, 5th Field Artillery Brigade, was killed by heavy shell at Noreuil, France, 3 May 1917, aged 31.

Walter arrived in Egypt after the Gallipoli campaign and was wounded in action during the epic storming of Pozieres by the 1st Division AIF. He was wounded in the abdomen sometime during the first three days of the assault. He was admitted to the 1/2 South Midland Field Ambulance on the 24 July 1916 but died the next day and buried in the Warloy-Baillon Communal Cemetery Extension.

Walter’s mum, Sarah Bayliss was granted a pension for the loss of her son, and all of his entitlements and personal effects. She was also left a will in her favour by her son Walter.

She stated on his roll of honour form that ‘Walter studied and passed an accountancy exam prior to enlisting and that he was working as an accountancy clerk.’
