Biography

"MEMORIAL TABLET.

The ceremony of unveiling a marble memorial tablet to the late Private W. G. D. Mobbs was performed by Mr. J. K, Shannon at the Bagot's Well public school on Wednesday evening in the presence of a large number of residents of the district. Among the visitors were Messrs. J. H. Hitchens, H. J. Truscott, R Rees, and A. S. Lewis, formerly members of the School Board of Advice, and the Rev. N. C. Goss. Mr. Shannon spoke of the deceased soldier, who was born and reared at Bagot's Well, as one of the finest young men of the district. His school life had been spent among them, and his fine spirit and manly nature set a grand example for other lads. He had known Mr. and Mrs. Mobbs for nearly a quarter of a century, and 20 years ago Mr. Mobbs had left his staff to take the position of manager of Spring Creek for Mr. John Murray, a position which he still held. Their eldest son had enlisted on October 20, 1914, and left Melbourne on February 12, 1915, just when he was 20 years of age. Other addresses were given by the visitors. When unveiled the tablet was seen to bear the following inscription:—

"Erected to the memory of Private Delmar Mobbs, an old scholar, killed at Gallipoli, 28th August, 1915. Faithful unto death."

Mr. Mobbs made a feeling response. Tea was provided for scholars and all others present. The whole arrangements were carried out under the supervision of Mrs. Wicks, the teacher, who organized the movement." - from the Kapunda Herald 25 Feb 1916 (nla.gov.au) (A photograph of the memorial tablet appears on Pte Mobbs' profile - on left)
