Served during The Great War, now resting at Sandgate Cemetery with my WW1 brother (Walter) at my side.
96 years ago today, on the Tuesday afternoon of the 20th October 1925, Driver John (Jack) Frederick Bartley, 3rd Australian Divisional Train, Australian Army Service Corps (Reg No-10625), plumber or gas engineer (Gasworks Manager) from 20 Tyrrell Street, Newcastle, New South Wales and Sydney? N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 41. METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) H SE. 53.
Born at Annandale, New South Wales on the 21st July 1884 to Thomas and Annie Bartley, Jack enlisted January 1916 at Sydney, N.S.W.
Jack returned home October 1919, apparently invalided due to gas poisoning (service record gives no indication), and was discharged on the 6th January 1920.
Mr. Bartley’s name has been inscribed on the Newcastle Central Methodist Mission Roll of Honor (photo, unveiled on the 28th April 1920, 41 names inscribed, 5 Fallen), Newcastle (Brown Street) Congregational Church Roll of Honour, Newcastle Surf Club & Life-Saving Brigade Honor Roll and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name not inscribed on the Newcastle Operative Plumbers' Society of N.S.W. Roll of Honour.
Younger brother Walter Dorman (1st Australian Divisional Train & 1st Divisional Motor Transport Company, Reg No-9482, born 1890, died 1924) resting side by side with Jack.
I have placed poppies in remembrance of Jack’s and brother Walter’s service for God, King & Country during The Great War.
