64 years ago today, on the 19th May 1959, Private John Thomas Kearns (M.M.), referred to as Jack, 3rd Battalion (Reg No-4498), horse driver from Little Young Street, Carrington, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 67. ANGLICAN 1-56. 14.

Born at Carrington, New South Wales on the 20th August 1891 to John Thomas and Caroline Kearns nee Jones; husband of Ethel Kearns nee Stubbs (married 1912, Wickham, N.S.W., of "Nazier", Arncliffe, N.S.W. (1920), died 22.11.1977, age 88, sleeping here), Jack enlisted on the 8th September 1915 at Liverpool, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board RMS Osterley on the 15th January 1916.

In Memorium for daughter Eleanor Daphne (Nellie) Kearns, born 12th October 1912, died 26th December 1914, a Bud in Heaven.

Granted leave to England from the 16.1.1918 to the 2.2.1918 and from the 6.1.1919 to the 29.1.1919.

Awarded Military Medal.

Suffering no wounds or illness, Jack returned home on the 11th June 1919, being discharged on the 3rd August 1919.

Mr. Kearns’s name has been inscribed on the Carrington Citizens' Memorial Gates and the Carrington Municipal District Roll of Honor. Name should have been inscribed on The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

Service record states Deceased 17.5.1959 (IWGC).
