Rupert was born in Cairns, Queensland in 1897 and was the youngest son of Mr. W.H. and Caroline SWALLOW of 'Glen Ayr' Northwood, Lane Cove River, NSW. He was educated at the St. Andrews' Cathedral Choir School and later at the Fort Street School. He joined the clerical department of the Sydney Morning Herald in 1912.
Volunteering for active service in June 1915, he enlisted as a Private, afterwards becoming Lance-Corporal with the reinforcements of the 3rd Battalion, and proceeded to France, after undergoing training in England, in March 1916. He was in action on numerous occasions, and was twice wounded, on the first occasion at Pozieres and on the second at Passchendaele. With the object of qualifying for a commission, he was at an officers' school in Devonshire when the armistice was signed. He returned to Australia in June 1919.
