Son of John BURLEIGH and Sarah Ann nee MILLER, Church Hill, Nirranda, Victoria

Prior to enlisting Herbert was a student in training at the Teacher's College, Carlton, Vic.

An Australian Rules footballer. He played in Carlton's 1914 and 1915 premierships, but like many others he had his career interrupted by WWI. He did however come back and play in 1919.
