From Died on this date – 26th June.... Private David Michael Lynch’s birth was registered in 1899 at Carlton, Victoria. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 6th July, 1895 stating he was a 19 year old Labourer from Carlton, Victoria.
Private David Michael Lynch embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Warilda (A69) on 8th February, 1916 with 12th Battalion (and disembarked at Egypt – not date or place recorded). He was transferred to 22nd Battalion on 19th April, 1916.
Private Lynch was admitted to Hospital on 12th May, 1916 suffering from Epilepsy. A Medical Report was completed on 14th May, 1916 & it was noted that “Has been treated for epilepsy for last 10 years. Had not had a fit for about 7 months before enlisting. Had one on transport & has had 5 since then. Has frequently hurt himself about head while in fit – Never bit tongue – has often passed ___ while unconscious.” The Medical Board found that Private David Michael Lynch should be discharged as permanently unfit for service. Headquarters A.I.F. approved the discharge on 15th June, 1916.
Private Lynch was transferred to Hospital Ship Karoola on 4th July, 1916 to be invalided to Australia due to Epilepsy. He embarked from Suez on 5th July, 1916. It was noted that Private Lynch had no fits on the voyage to Australia. On arriving in Australia he was admitted to No. 11 Australian General Hospital, Melbourne on 3rd August, 1916. It was reported that Private Lynch had not had any fits for past 2 months. He was discharged on 26th August, 1916.
Private David Michael Lynch was medically discharged from the Australian Imperial Force due to his Epilepsy on 13th September, 1916.
David Michael Lynch stated he was a 21 year old, single, Clerk from Carlton, Victoria when he re-enlisted at Geelong, Victoria on 23rd September, 1916. David Lynch did state on his Attestation Papers that he had served 18 months with 22nd Battalion, A.I.F. but had been medically discharged.
Private Lynch embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Medic (A7) on 16th December, 1916 with 59th Infantry Battalion, 8th Reinforcements & disembarked at Plymouth, England on 18th February, 1917. He was written up on 4 separate occasions while at Sea for Offences between 16th December, 1916 & 20th January, 1917 – obscene language; disobeying lawful command, insolence to an Officer, Absent from Morning Parade.
A District Court Martial had been held on board HMAT Medic on 24th & 25th January, 1917 where Private David Michael Lynch had committed an offence at Sea on 21st January, 1917 – When on active service using insulting language to his superior Officer in that on the 21st January, 1917 after being medically examined by Capt. Nankervis, A.M.C. said to and in the presence of the said Capt. Nankervis “You ought to be a f___ vet not a doctor.” Private Lynch pleaded not guilty. The Finding of the Court was Guilty & he was sentenced to 28 days detention from 25th January, 1917 & forfeited 32 days’ pay.
On arriving in England Private David Michael Lynch was marched in to 15th Training Battalion at Hurdcott, Wiltshire from Overseas on 18th February, 1917. He was admitted to Fovant Military Hospital, Wiltshire on 14th March, 1917 with inflammation of larynx.
Private Lynch was detached to Australian Army Medical Corps Training Depot at No. 2 Camp, Parkhouse, Wiltshire on 27th April, 1917. He was marched out to No. 2 Command Depot at Weymouth, Dorset on 9th June, 1917 where he was written up for an Offence 29th June, 1917 while posted at Monte Video – Drunk & using obscene language to an N.C.O. He was awarded 3 days Field Punishment No. 2.
Private Lynch was transferred to A.M.C. Details at Parkhouse, Wiltshire on 2nd July, 1917. He was written up for an Offence on 24th July, 1917 - “Conduct to the prejudice of good order & military discipline viz. absenting himself from parade without permission.” He was awarded a forfeiture of 4 days’ pay.
Private Lynch was attached for duty with 1st A.D.H. (Australian Dermatological Hospital), Bulford on 3rd August, 1917 & detached from duty with A.M.C. Details Parkhouse.
Private David Michael Lynch was absent without leave from A.M.C. Details, Bulford, Wiltshire from 3rd August, 1917. A Court of Inquiry was held at Bulford on 27th August, 1917 where Private Lynch was declared an illegal absentee. He was marched in to Bulford from being an illegal absentee on 13th October, 1917.
Private Lynch was admitted to Military Hospital (Delhi Hospital), Tidworth, Wiltshire on 24th October, 1917 with pneumonia. He was discharged to Training Depot on 10th November, 1917 & marched in to 1st A.D.H. (Australian Dermatological Hospital), Bulford on 10th November, 1917.
Private Lynch was AWL (Absent without leave) from Bulford on 14th November, 1917. He was declared an illegal absentee by a Court of Inquiry at Bulford on 7th December, 1917 & was apprehended on 21st December, 1917.
Private David Lynch was marched out to Detention Barracks at Tidworth, Wiltshire on 6th January, 1918.
A Court Martial was held at Bulford, Wiltshire on 21st January, 1918. Private David Michael Lynch was charged with being 1. AWL at Bulford on 3rd August, 1917 until apprehended on 1st October, 1917. 2. London – Being in possession of a false pass. 3. Giving a false name. 4. Bulford – AWL at Bulford from 14th November, 1917 until apprehended in London on 21st December, 1917. 5. London - Being in possession of a false pass. Private Lynch pleaded GUILTY to all charges.
The Finding of the Court – Guilty of all charges. Sentence – To undergo detention for one year. Total Forfeiture – 536 days’ pay.
Private Lynch was admitted to Military Hospital, Tidworth on 31st January, 1918 with Scabies – severe infection. He was discharged to Training Depot on 26th February, 1918.
Private David Michael Lynch was marched out to Lewes Detention Barracks on 2nd March, 1918 & admitted to Lewes Detention Barracks the same day.
Lewes Detention Barracks
On 1st November, 1917, Captain Griffiths of the A.I.F. arrived at HM Prison Lewes, in the town of Lewes, near Brighton on the Sussex coast, to take control of the prison. Having signed over the prison from HM Prison Service to the A.I.F., Captain Griffiths then formally raised the A.I.F. Detention Barracks, an establishment that was to operate for almost the next two years.
Private Lynch was discharged from Lewes Detention Barracks on 21st June, 1918 & admitted to 2nd East General Hospital, Brighton, Sussex the same day with Bronchitis. He was reported dangerously ill with Pneumonia on 23rd June, 1918.
Private David Michael Lynch died at 12.50 am on 26th June, 1918 at 2nd East General Hospital, Brighton, Sussex, England from Pneumonia. He was buried in Hove Old Cemetery, Hove, Sussex, England.
