Biography contributed by Helen Harmer

Norman Frederick Knox was born in Fremantle on the 8.8.1893 to Frederick and Christina Knox. He had three siblings: Eliza, Mabel and Vernon and the family lived in Hampton Road, Fremantle. Norman was educated at Scotch College.  He enlisted on the 2.9.15 at Perth, was appointed a Private with Service number 4136. He was aged 22 years 1 month, a Clerk and Presbyterian. Norman was described as being 5 feet 9 inches tall with a chest measurement of 34-38 inches, sallow complexion, brown eyes and dark hair. When Norman enlisted, he was engaged and he initially recorded his next of kin as Eileen May Knox, his wife. However, the marriage was put off. His mother wrote a letter to the Army stating that he was never married and Eileen provided a letter to confirm this. Norman began training at Blackboy Hill on the 13.9.15 with the 11th Infantry Battalion. On the 8.11.1915, he was promoted to Corporal with B Company. He embarked at Fremantle on HMAT Borda on the 17.1.1916, arriving on the 9.2.16 at Suez. He left Alexandria for France on the 29.3.16, where the battalion served near Fleurbaix. On 21.4.16, Norm was sent to the 3rd Field Ambulance with influenza and returned to his unit on the 5.5.16. In July the 11th Battalion was sent to the Somme battlefield.  He was killed in action between the 22 and 25.7.1916 at Pozières, aged 22.  His body was never found, so he is commemorated at the Memorial in Villers Bretonneux MR26 part IV K.M. His personal effects returned were a razor strop, nail clippers and a hold-all.
