From Australian Remembrance Army

Private Horatio Isaacs (Service Numbers: WWI 982, WWII Q302139), an Australian veteran of both World Wars who served our nation at Gallipoli, is among almost 800 previously unmarked WWI veterans’ graves in Lutwyche Cemetery we have now honoured with a plaque recognising their service for Australia.

On 23 September 2023, his plaque was unveiled in Lutwyche Cemetery, along with a further 300 plaques on the previously unmarked graves of Australian World War One veterans:

𝗛𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼 𝗜𝘀𝗮𝗮𝗰𝘀 was born in London, England on 12 August 1887 to parents Jane Louisa Hart and Horatio Isaacs. He had two sisters, Jane Victoria (born 1885) and Elizabeth Beatrice (born 1896). His sister Jane was married in England in 1904 and in 1911, Jane and Horatio (Snr) emigrated to Australia with Horatio (Jnr) and Elizabeth. They embarked from London on 16 August 1911, arriving in Townsville, Queensland on 10 October. Sadly, Horatio’s mother Jane died just over a year later in Townsville on 14 September 1912.

On 17 August 1914, Horatio enlisted in Townsville with the Australian Imperial Force and embarked per ‘HMAT Omrah’ on 24 September. After disembarking in Egypt, he proceeded to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force at Gallipoli on 2 March 1915.

Horatio was wounded in action at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915, receiving a shrapnel wound to the right side of his jaw, and was admitted to the 1st Australian General Hospital. He was later transferred to England, embarking on ‘Wardilla’ on 20 July. Whilst in England, Horatio married Alice Maud Vandy. The couple were married in Ilford, Essex on 29 August 1915.

The following year on 10 January 1916, Horatio was returned to Egypt for duty and was discharged to his unit in Cairo in March. He was transferred to the 4th Australian Divisional Base Depot in May 1916 before embarking from Alexandria on 7 June, disembarking seven days later in Marseilles, France. On 26 January 1917, Horatio joined the 9th Battalion.

Horatio was wounded in action in Belgium on 3 October 1917, and admitted to hospital with a shot wound to his chest. He was discharged to duty on 12 October, rejoining his battalion in France on 30 November. Horatio marched out from France on 20 September 1918, embarking for Australia per ‘Port Sydney’ on 8 October. He disembarked in Australia on 2 December and was discharged the following year on 3 February 1919.

Horatio’s first child, Eunice Alice Isaacs was born in August 1918 in England. In March 1919, Horatio submitted an application for free passage for his wife Alice and daughter Eunice, who joined Horatio in Australia. The family settled in the Brisbane suburb of Taringa, and Horatio and Jane had two more children – Eric Roebuck Isaacs (born 1921) and Daphne Charlotte Isaacs (born 1923).

On 5 June 1940, Horatio enlisted for service in WW2 at Victoria Barracks in Brisbane. He was discharged on 4 March 1941 (Fibrositis). Horatio died on 11 May 1952, aged 64 years and was buried in ANZAC Section 8 at Lutwyche Cemetery.

After decades without recognition at his place of burial, his grave now bears a plaque commemorating his service to Australia — ensuring his name endures among those remembered for their duty and sacrifice. His dignity and identity have now been restored.

We have remembered him.
