He was 28 and is one of three soldier sons of David and Bessie [Betsy] D. Ross of 49, King St., Montrose, Forfarshire, who fell in action in just over a year. He left a widow, Isabella Ross, of Rossie Braes, Warragul, Victoria, Australia.

His younger brothers were:

Private David Ross, aged 20, Service No: 240985,  "C" Coy. 4th/5th Bn. Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) Date of Death: 31/07/1917 – no known grave - YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL - Panel 37. 

Private  Charles Cameron Ross, aged 23, Service No: 203123, "C" Coy. 7th Bn.  Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) Date of Death: 24/07/1918-  no known grave - SOISSONS MEMORIAL.

All three brothers are remembered on the Montrose War Memorial.
