Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

A Returned Veteran of The Great War resting at Sandgate Cemetery, Honour and Dignity close to being restored.

94 years ago today, on the Sunday afternoon of the 15th July 1928, Private John William Lloyd, 30th Battalion (Reg No-2384), electrical assistant from Nott Street, Merewether, New South Wales and Ridge Street, Merewether, N.S.W., father of two, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 47. PRESBYTERIAN-17SW. 96.

Born at Manchester? New South Wales about 1881 to John and Mary A Lloyd; husband of Mary Livingstone Lloyd nee Smith (married 1920, Merewether, N.S.W., died 1964, 36 years a widow, sleeping here, PRESBYTERIAN-17SW. 94.), John enlisted August 1915 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 22.11.1916 (deformed feet).
John returned home January 1918, being discharged medically unfit (injured left foot, deformed feet) on the 11th February 1918.

Mr. Lloyd’s name has been inscribed on the Merewether (Mitchell Park) Memorial Gates, Merewether St. Augustine's Church Roll of Honour, Newcastle South Public School Roll of Honour and the Merewether St. David's Presbyterian Church Roll of Service/Roll of Honour (photo, unveiled on the 25th February 1917, 23 names originally inscribed, 64 names now inscribed, 4 Fallen. Not the original Board. Located at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, 12 Laman Street, Newcastle. N.S.W.). Name possibly inscribed on the Newcastle Federated Ironworkers' Association Roll of Honour (whereabouts unknown).

If John’s name had been inscribed on the family headstone plaque it has now disappeared, so February 2020 I placed a cross adorned with poppies at the gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

A Plaque shall be installed at the gravesite courtesy of the Forgotten Diggers Headstone Project.

Photo shown is a Virtual Image created by Terry St George to show us what the concrete base with plinth and Plaque would look like when gravesite is complete, so John is “Forever Remembered”.

Lest We Forget.
