He was 21 and the son of George and Mary (nee Spaul) Maas of Carisbrook, Victoria, Australia. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 14 April 1915 and embarked for overseas on 25 June 1915 per HMAT "Ceramic" (A40).
