Served during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
82 years ago today, on the Monday afternoon of the 18th August 1941, Private John Joseph Tonner, 20th Battalion (Reg No-1405), miner from Cumberland Street, Teralba, New South Wales and William Street, Teralba, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, aged about 60. CATHOLIC 2-63. 9.
Born at Keady, Armagh, Ireland about 1881 to Patrick and Agnes Tonner; husband of Elizabeth Agnes Tonner nee ? (married ?, died 6.10.1968, age 85, sleeping here), John enlisted on the 19th April 1915 at Liverpool, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A35 Berrima on the 26th June 1915.
Admitted to hospital 17.4.1916 (varicose veins).
John returned home on the 17th July 1916, being discharged medically unfit (varicose veins) on the 5th September 1916.
Mr. Tonner’s name has been inscribed on the Teralba Soldiers' Memorial.
Not officially commemorated.
Unfortunately, John’s grave plaque is now unreadable, and I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
