Paddy was the third of five children of James Barnett Smith (b1858 at Port Sorell, Tasmania) and Ella Frances Louisa Edgcumbe (b1868 in Deloraine, Tasmania). James (a Labourer) and Ella married in 1888 in Emu Bay, Tasmania. James worked as a Labourer.

Paddy was a Labourer in Sisters Creek, Emu Bay Tasmania in 1916 when he and his two brothers - Rupert James and Joseph Leslie - travelled to Perth, Western Australia and enlisted in the AIF. Paddy served as a Private (Service No:6348) with 12th Infantry Battalion and was reported as Missing at Lagincourt, France on 15 April 1917. He was Confirmed a German PoW on 20 August 1917 - held at Limberg PoW Camp in Germany. Paddy was repatriated on 14 December 1918, returned to Australia in May 1919 and was Discharged in November 1919.

Returning to Tasmania, Paddy was a Farmer at Montumana in 1922 when he married Ruby Rose Barker (b1895 in Ulverstone, Tasmania) in Rocky Cape, where Ruby was a Dressmaker. Paddy and Ruby settled at Montumana where Paddy was a Farmer and they raised their family. Daughter Ella Jean (Private; Service No:TF150488) served in WWII.

Ruby died in 1949 and Paddy in 1967.
