Son of David Edward Underwood and Elizabeth Emma Underwood nee Jones of Henley Beach formerly of Northgate Street, Unley, SA.

Brother of Walter Clifton Underwood who returned to Australia on 16 May 1919 having served with the 1st Light Horse Machine Gun Squadron and Douglas Jerrold Underwood who returned to Australia on 18 October 1919 having served with the Australian Army Medical Corps

Commenced return to Australia on 21 December 1917 aboard HT Persic disembarking a Melbourne on 8 January 1918 for onward travel to Adelaide.

On 17 July 1919 Frank married Mary Inkster at the residence of A.J. Inkster of Elliston, SA
