Son of William Oswald and Margaret E. Oswald of Regent Street, Cessnock, NSW

Commenced return to Australia from Taranto on 24 September 1918 aboard HT Kaiser-i-Hind then transhipped to HT Devon on 16 October 1918 disembarking on 23 November 1918 at Melbourne for onward travel to Sydney
