Robert Singleton CAMERON, (Service Number 2885) was born in Warwick, Qld., in 1893. He joined the Tramways as a conductor in Sydney in 1914. In July 1916 he was released from duty to enlist in the AIF.
‘A fortnight before leaving [the training camp at] Kiama for Liverpool, he had the misfortune to fall over a tent peg and injure his knee. No ill effect from this accident was felt until reaching Liverpool, two or three days before sailing, when his thigh became swollen and painful. Despite this inconvenience, our gallant comrade was determined to leave for the front. His mates supplied a taxi-cab, and the journey to the ship was made in this. Shortly after passing Sydney Heads, he reported sick, and it was found necessary to remove him to the ship’s hospital, where, despite medical skill and attention, he passed away. He was loved by all his company.’ (World’s News, Sydney, Sat. 9 June 1917, p.9)
He died of toxaemia aboard HMAT ‘Port Nicholson’ on 16 November 1916, in the Indian Ocean, and was buried at sea the following day.
