Youngest of three brothers (Joe and Alex) who served in WWII, Able Seaman Frederick Clyde Kavanagh (Service No:B2091) initially served as a Naval Cadet (RANV) from 1 July 1937, and enlisted in the RAN on 2 September 1939 - Signaller. Able Seaman Kavanagh's service included HMAS Leeuwin, Canberra, Penguin, Cerberus and Rushcutter, and he was attached to HMAS Lonsdale at Discharge on 16 July 1946.
Fred was born in Brisbane QLD in 1918, seventh of nine children of Harry William Kraushaar (b1883 in Surrey, England) and Jane Barber (b1884 in Maclean, New South Wales). Harry immigrated in 1896, arriving in Brisbane on board the Merkara, and was a Public Servant in 1904 in Brisbane when he and Jane married. The couple settled in Brisbane, where they raised their family and Harry was a Public Servant. During WWI, Harry changed the family name to Kavanagh.
Fred was a Volunteer Naval Cadet in 1939 when he enlisted in the Navy, and in 1944 in Sydney, New South Wales married his first wife Dorothea Iris Stella Hart (b1918 in Queanbeyan, New South Wales). By 1949 Fred and Dorothea had separated - Dorothea was working as a Weaver in Sydney and Fred was a Clerk with the SES in Melbourne. Both remarried - Fred in Melbourne in 1951 to fellow SES Clerk, Joy Frances Knight (b1923 in Melbourne, Victoria). Fred and Joy settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Fred was a Public Servant (Department of the Navy) until retirement. Fred died in 1997 and Joy in 2025.
