GHG Rolls Poem
My great-uncle Glanville Henry George Rolls (known as George) wrote a poem while on board his ship heading to battle entitled "Australia as a Nation". It shows the optimistic and patriotic frame of mind of the soldiers at that time. A digitised copy of the poem is now held by the State Library of Queensland and is attached here under the "Links & Documents" heading.
George was killed at the battle of Moquet Farm on 5 September 1916.
Private HF Roles of the 49th Battalion wrote - "We lost poor old George Rolls in our last stunt. He is reported missing. I don't hold much hope for him unless he was taken prisoner. I don't think that was so, though let us hope he is safe - he was a great mate to have. I don't think you could get a better mate than George".
I enjoy the entry in his war record showing a charge brought against him in Sept. 1915 - for "playing piano during parade hours"!! I wish I had heard him.
