Telegraphist James Glynn Bensley (Service No:B4915) enlisted in the RAN on 23 September 1943 as an Ordinary Seaman on board HMAS Cerberus, and was a Telegraphist attached to HMAS Moreton at Discharge on 11 October 1946. Telegraphist Bensley served as radio operator on minesweeper corvette vessels, such as HMAS Whyalla, and in an interview in April 2024 (Australian Seniors News), Glynn said 'I spent most of my time on an anti submarine frigate in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of Papua New Guinea'. His father James served in the AIF in WWI and RAAF in WWII, and sister Yule served with the WAAAF. On 25 April 2024, Glynn recited The Ode of Remembrance at an ANZAC Day Service at Carinity Wishart Gardens - 'It's a special day remembering friends, my dad, my sister and people I served with - and remembering all our troops who were lost and who served in war' (Australian Seniors News; 2024)
Glynn was born in Brisbane, QLD in 1926, second of four children of James Bensley (b1894 in Ipswich, QLD) and Kathleen Helen Dewar (b1902 in Brisbane, QLD). James was a Carpenter in 1915 when he enlisted in the AIF, and following his Discharge he and Kathleen married in 1922 in Brisbane. The couple lived in Stanthorpe and Brisbane, where they raised their family and James was a Carpenter/Master Builder.
Glynn was seventeen years of age when he enlisted in the RAN. Following his Discharge, he worked as a Radion Technician in Brisbane, where in 1949 he married Jean Downie Croll (b1925 in Brisbane, QLD) - Jean was working in Nundah as a Shop Assistant. Glynn and Jean settled in Brisbane, where they raised their family and were active in their Church community. In 1950 Glynn joined the Public Service as a Clerk with the Department of Treasury's Taxation Branch, and retired in 1985. Jean died in 2017 and Glynn in 2024.
