Ernest was the son of Charles Edward WEBB & Ellen GEORGE and was born on the 22nd of October 1896 in Wilmington, SA.
His parents were married on the 1st of May 1895 in Pt Augusta, SA.
His father was the son of George WEBB and was born in 1864.
His mother was the daughter of Thomas GEORGE & Catherine MURPHY and was born on the 18th of January 1867 in Stirling, SA.
Ernest was the eldest child born into the family of 6 children.
His father was a publican and when Ernest was 3 years old the family moved to Mannanarie and his father took over the licence of the Mannanarie Hotel for 5 years.
After completing his schooling Ernest gained employment as a labourer and in 1912 the family moved to Torrensville. They purchased a home at 13 East Street and Ernest joined the Militia.
Ernest married Clara Matilda KINSMAN on the 17th of February 1917 in the All Saints Church, Hindmarsh, SA.
Clara was the daughter of George Richard KINSMAN & Clara Edith RICHARDS and was born in 1891 in Brunswick, VIC.
They made their home in Wynarka where Ernest was a farmer, but then moved back to Adelaide and lived with his parents at 13 East Street, Torrensville.
At the age of 24, Ernest enlisted into the AIF on the 1st of November 1917 in Adelaide and was allotted the service number 518 and posted to the Remounts ASC (Australian Service Corps) in Mitcham Camp.
He listed his wife, of 13 East Street, Torrensville, as his next of kin.
Ernest embarked from Adelaide on board SS Chindwarra on the 8th of November 1917 and disembarked in Calcutta.
Upon arriving at Calcutta their services were no longer required and his Unit was disbanded and demobilised.
Ernest embarked from Calcutta on the 16th of December 1918 on board SS Gracchus and after spending Christmas 1917 on board the ship he disembarked in Adelaide on the 8th of January 1918.
He had only served 62 days overseas and was discharged from the AIF on the 8th of January 1918.
They welcomed their first child; Ernest Glanville, on the 17th of January 1919, followed by Emory Vernon Kinsman in June 1920.
Sadly Emory died on the 5th of December 1920 and they buried him in the West Terrace Cemetery.
Ernest became a horse trotter driver and on the 1st of January 1922 for reasons unknown, he deserted his wife and son and moved to Kadina.
The following year he was imprisoned for 14 days for failing to pay maintenance to Clara and then he stole some neck ties and was imprisoned for a further 14 days.
He then moved to Wallaroo as a horse breaker, but went bankrupt, so moved back to Adelaide.
In 1929 he was struggling to find work and failed to pay his maintenance and was imprisoned for a month.
By the early 1930’s he was still living at home with his parents but had now secured employment as a barman.
With the outbreak of WW2 his son Ernest enlisted on the 9th of January 1940 (S111037) and was posted to the CMF Band as he was medically unfit for service.
When Ernest’s father died in 1944 the family home was transferred to Ernest.
On the 30th of July 1946 Ernest was drunk and driving a car when he hit Francis Callija from behind, who was passenger in a motor cycle side cart.
The accident happened in Glover Avenue, Adelaide and 16 years old Francis was killed.
Ernest was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment in the Kyeema Prison Camp at Kuitpo and suspended from driving for 5 years.
He was released on the 26th of April 1947 and moved home to Torrensville.
Ernest died on the 8th of July 1985 in the Royal Adelaide Hospital and was buried 3 days later in the Hindmarsh Cemetery; Section Lower D68.
