72 years ago today, on the Monday of the 31st August 1953, Private Sidney (Sydney) Vernon Mooney, 57th Battalion (Reg No-4284A), metal moulder (Messrs. Morison & Bearby, Limited), from 17 Moorehead Street, Redfern, New South Wales and 14 Thomas Street, Mayfield, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 69. CATHOLIC 2-33. 154.
Born at Lambton, New South Wales on the 18th June 1884 to Richard J and Margaret Mooney; husband of Amy Violet Mooney nee?, married?, died?, from 134 Elizabeth Street, Waterloo, New South Wales and 53 Castlereagh Street (Lane), Redfern, N.S.W., re-married 1925 to Alice Annie Mooney nee Kemlo, Redfern, N.S.W., died 9.2.1955, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 70, sleeping here, Sid enlisted on the 16th August 1915 with the 1st Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A60 Aeneas on the 20th December 1915.
Admitted to hospital 28.4.1916 (influenza), 8.11.1916 (trench feet, mild), 29.10.1918 (influenza).
Commenced return to Australia 13.4.1919.
Sid arrived home on the 3rd June 1919, being discharged on the 26th July 1919.
Mr. Mooney’s name has been inscribed on the Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board and the Morison & Bearby Limited Roll of Honour.
I have placed poppies at Sid’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
