Papaya
When he was heading back from working in the camp for the Japanese he seen a papaya and they were heavily malnourished so he quickly strayed from the line to grab it but when he snuck back into the line a Japanese guard caught him and hit his ear with the head of his rifle (which made him deaf in that ear) and he would have likely been killed if people at the back of the line didnt make a distraction being a scuffle which made the guard forget about Harold.
