Allan (listed as Alan in his record of service) was born in 1925 in Richmond. His father, Alexander James Motteram, served in the 29th Infantry Battalion in WWI. Allan's older sister, Eva Claire, enlisted into the Air Force aged 21 in 1942. Allan served in the RAN from 1943 and was discharged in 1944.
After the war, Allan married Joyce and they had four children together. He lived in Reservoir in Melbourne's northern suburbs, but as a Richmond native he was always an avid fan of the Richmond Football Club. Allan died in 2004.
