Family
Cyril was born in 1896 and was the son of Richard Bricheno Coles and
Emma G Raffiell. Cyril was raised by his grandmother in Marrickville NSW after his parent's separation. Richard worked as a railway ganger on the Cobar line and was providing support from his wage towards Cyril in the early days.
Richard married my great grandmother Mima Mason (nee Thomas) a widow in 1908
Mima had children from her 1st marriage to John Mason, one of which whom was William John Mason. William served with the 13th Battalion and was in France in 1916 where he was wounded and died of those wounds in July 1916.
I am of the belief Cyril joined the 13th Battalion because of his connection with William, then sadly in September 1917 Cyril too was killed in action.
Both my Great Grandparents like so many others suffering such tragedy.
