Son of Thomas and Maria Brophy of the Victoria Hotle, High Street, Epping, Victoria; brother of John Harry Brophy who returned to Australia on 13 February 1917  after having served in the 21 Battalion

June 1915 - parents signed letter of consent to allow Matthew to serve overseas
