Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Served during The Great War, resting peacefully at Sandgate Cemetery.

74 years ago today, on the Monday afternoon of the 27th January 1947, Sapper Harold Alexander Hill, 5th Australian Light Horse Signal Troop (Reg No-18326), postal employee from Rawson Street, Kurri Kurri, New South Wales and 131 Maitland Road, Islington, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 52. CATHOLIC 2-51. 111.

Born at Walcha, New South Wales on the 13th September 1894 to Alexander and Alice Hill of 62 Devonshire Street, West Maitland, New South Wales; husband of Ada M Hill nee Gorman (married 1922, Hamilton, N.S.W., died 1969?), Harold enlisted November 1916 with the 1st-4th Signal Troops, April 1917 Reinforcements at Rutherford, N.S.W.
Admitted to hospital 20.8.1917 (septic hip), 6.12.1918 (sickness not stated), Harold returned home September 1919, being discharged on the 1st October 1919.

I have not located Mr Hill’s name inscribed on any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour. Name not inscribed on the Kurri Kurri War Memorial. Name possibly inscribed on the Kurri Kurri M.U.I.O.O.F. (245) Roll of Honour.

There is no indication inscribed on Harold’s headstone that he served with the 1st A.I.F., so I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label in remembrance of his sacrifice for God, King and Country.

Lest We Forget.
