Ernest Eric Lawton was killed in action with the 49th Battalion at Mouquet Farm, 5 days short of his 20th birthday. His older brother, 1710 Gnr. James Colin Hasty Lawton, 2nd Division Trench Mortar Battery, Australian Field Artillery, had died of wounds three weeks before at Pozieres, on 11 August 1916, age 23. Their father had died in 1908 when the two brothers were still only children. Cousin Pte J Lawton killed in action.
