Leading Stoker (Mechanic) Kevin John Maher (Service No:23563) enlisted in the RAN on 14 September 1939 as a Stoker III. He served on a number of ships, including HMAS Penguin, Leeuwin, Australia and Hobart and was attached to HMAS Penguin when he was Discharged on 11 January 1949. 

Born in 1921 at Mt Larcombe via Gladstone QLD, Kevin was the youngest of five children of Daniel Maher (b1873 in Rockhampton, QLD) and Ann (Annie) Adams (b1879 in Rockhampton, QLD). Daniel was working as a Stockman at Hillview Farm in Duaringa via Rockhampton when he and Annie married in 1909. They lived in Duaringa, Mt Larcombe and Rockhampton - Daniel worked as a Grazier and Labourer.

Kevin was a Carpenter in Sydney NSW when he enlisted in the RAN in 1939. In 1944 in Rockhampton QLD he married Coral Esther Baker (b1923 in Rockhampton, QLD) and following his Discharge, Kevin and Coral settled in  Fitzroy QLD where Kevin worked for Queensland Government Railways (QGR) - initially as a Cleaner and then Fireman. By the late 1950s Kevin was a Locomotive Driver - in Emerald QLD and then by the mid 1960s  in Rockhampton. Kevin died in 2011 and Coral in 2018.
