Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Private William McLaren (Service No:633) enlisted in the AIF on 22 September 1914, and was attached to 15th Infantry Battalion on 22 December 1914 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Egypt (Gallipoli Peninsula) on board HMAT A40 Ceramic. Private McLaren embarked from Alexandria for Marseille on 1 June 1916, and was WiA in France on 17 July 1917 - shrapnel wounds caused multiple fractures, resulting in amputation below the knee of his left leg. On 16 December 1917 Private McLaren embarked from England for Sydney on board HT Kanowna, and was attached to 15th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 20 March 1918. Older brother Daniel also served in WWI, and younger brother Thomas served in WWII (PoW).

Born in Brisbane, QLD in 1893, Bill was fourth of nine children of Daniel McLaren (b1857 in Ipswich, QLD) and Elizabeth Margaret Fullerton (b1867 in Ipswich, QLD). Daniel and Elizabeth married in 1887 in Brisbane, where they settled and raised their family, and Daniel worked as a Labourer, and from 1920 for QLD Rail as a Shedman and then Driver.

Bill worked in Brisbane as a Labourer before enlisting in the AIF. Following Discharge, he lived in Roma Street in Brisbane with an older brother (Andrew) before marrying Coral Dulcie Gladys Cherry (b1909 in Warwick, QLD) in Brisbane in 1928. Bill and Coral settled in Brisbane where they raised their family, until Bill's death in 1935. Coral died in 1938.
